Launch - The Book Club: Series 1

We’re very excited to be introducing the first edition of our monthly Book Club. Our aim is to bring you literature focused around wellbeing, culture and motivation. For our first instalment, we are joined by Melanie Mitchell, our brilliantly accustomed Buying and Merchandising Senior Consultant. Melanie will be giving her opinions on three of her favourite books: The Chimp Paradox; The Alchemist; and How to be Parisian: Wherever You Are. Make sure you set sometime aside to enjoy these greats and let us know what you think...

The Chimp Paradox
Managing ones emotions is a concept we are challenged with everyday. In order to understand these emotions, we must first understand the origin; where do our impulses come from and why do we have certain instincts? Steve Peters’ The Chimp Paradox is based on scientific facts and principles to give us a better understanding of the human mind and its thought processes. In a real eye opener, Peters tries to simplify the complexity of the brain into three functions; The Chimp; The Computer; and The Human. Can you channel your inner Chimp?

What We Say
“You’ve got to be a little bit crazy to work in Fashion; Steve Peters’ The Chimp Paradox is an intriguing fascinating read on mind management and emotional intelligence. I was given this book after expressing an interest in the topic to a Corporate Coach I had the pleasure of working with. In his profession, he uses a combination of neuro-linguistics, behavioural psychology and other cutting edge learning techniques to support leaders to make an impact within their organizations. It’s a go to book for providing simple techniques to understand your own behavior and the behavior of others. This inspiring read is not only useful in your professional life, but also incredibly relevant in your personal life, too; especially with the kids!”

The Alchemist
The Alchemist follows the journey of Santiago, an Andalusian shepard boy searching for treasures beyond his wildest imaginations. After having a prophetical recurring dream, Santiago takes to the desert to pursue his ‘Personal Legend’. Along the way, he learns to listen to his heart and more importantly realise that his dreams are not just his, but part of the Soul of the Universe.

What We Say
“Ever since I was bought Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist I repaid the favour to many of my friends. The essential message of the novel is to listen to your heart and follow your dreams. For me, it was an emotive and thought provoking read that made me stop and ponder on life throughout. Its influential message and inspiring words motivated me to follow my dreams and resulted in me travelling across Central and South America.”

How to Be Parisian: Wherever You Are
French authors Sophie Mas, Audrey Diwan, Caroline De Maigret and Anne Berest give a fresh and original depiction on what it really means to be Parisienne including style, entertainment, love and culture. Through personal experiences, the authors set out to reveal everything from natural looks to personality tips. You will follow them on their journey to dates, parties, dinners and even some mischief and surprises. How to Be Parisian: Wherever You Are will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions and tap into your inner cool.

What We Say
“I absolutely love How to be Parisian: Wherever You Are from Parisienne style icons Sophie, Audrey, Caroline and Anne. In a tongue and cheek style, the read covers everything from Parisian fashion to daily lifestyle and of course, the men. I’m obsessed with the effortless ‘French Chic’ style and as a frequent visitor to the French capital, the book takes me back to drinking Aperol Spritz and smoking on the Rue de Perle feeling seriously Bohemian. Another one that’s a great gift for friends.”
