Harrods Opens Charity Shop

Charity shop shopping just got very exciting. Today, Harrods, in aid of NSPCC, have opened the doors to the first charity pop-up store in their 184-year history. Aptly named Fashion Re-Told, the store is based within walking distance from their Knightsbridge HQ and will be displaying different ranges of designer wear, from Mulberry to Victoria Beckham. Prices range around £100 to £200 for both vintage and new garments. “If you walked past you’d think it is a designer fashion shop,” Harrods managing director Michael Ward said. “If Harrods does it, Harrods does it properly… No one would ever think of Harrods running a charity shop, it’s a very British thing that foreign brands can’t really do. It’s all about having a bit of fun, making it light-hearted.”

Situated on Sloane Street, the pop-up boutique, donated by Cadogan Estates, will last for one month with the possible plans for more pop-ups if it’s successful. The initiative comes just months after Vetements used Harrods as a stage to highlight the issue of over production within fashion. Customer, employees and brands were all invited to donate to the cause with a total of 4,000 pieces being donated. Now, all the garments used in the powerful display will be available to buy on daily-changing rails in the millennial pink store. Alex Greco Wells, head of visual merchandising at Harrods, told WWD, “Number one for myself is that it is completely Instagrammable, because when you’re doing a charitable initiative, if you don’t generate noise on every platform, you’re never going to make it a success... We just want to create something fun, a visual interpretation of an appropriate aesthetic for the collaboration, without the ostentatious and overpowering feel of a luxury store,” he added.

All profits made across the month will go directly to Harrods’ long standing charity partner, NSPCC, whose staff have been trained by the department store’s employees on how to serve customers within Fashion Re-told. The charities deputy director of fundraising, Claire Hoyle commented, “We’d like to thank Harrods for being so committed to their partnership with us and Cadogan for a stunning space.” Consider our Saturday plans cancelled.
