Dolce & Gabbana Embroiled in Racism Dispute

Dolce & Gabbana have been forced to cancel their Shanghai catwalk show following outrage amongst the public regarding their new controversial marketing campaign. The video, posted on China’s social media platform Weibo, was taken down less than 24 hours after it was posted and featured a Chinese model trying to eat typical Italian food with chopsticks.

The highly controversial video campaign was made worse when offensive comments disgracing the Chinese culture were posted on Stefano Gabbana’s official Instagram page. Following a social media outcry, ‘#BoycottDolce’ was trending on social media. As a result, the Italian fashion house informed guests that the #DGTheGreatShow catwalk presentation, scheduled to take place today, has been cancelled.

The brand, and owners, have recently come out on their social media pages, announcing their Instagram accounts had been hacked with the derogatory comments not being views of their own. Stefano said, “My Instagram account has been hacked. My legal office is working on this. I love China and the Chinese Culture. I’m so sorry for what happened.”

This is not the first time the brand has been in controversial light. There were outcries from Chinese netizens last year, when the brand released a campaign, also for their #DGLovesChina series, which depicted a backwards and underdeveloped Beijing. Previously Stefano also received heavy criticism after calling Selena Gomez “ugly” and Chiara Ferragni’s wedding dress ‘cheap’. He may have only recently caused offence to Ricardo Tisci and Burberry, commenting on Naomi Campbells Burberry dress as ‘Very Dolce & Gabbana’.

Whilst the Italian duo insist they are the victims of a very cruel hacking, they cannot be reached for comment at this time.
