BFC/GQ Designer Menswear Fund 2019
The menswear fashion elite descended upon private members club, Annabel’s, last night for the fifth annual British Fashion Council/GQ Designer Menswear Fund 2019. Chaired by BFC menswear chair and editor of British GQ, Dylan Jones, the judging committee comprised of Dior’s Kim Jones, Google’s Alison Lomax, co-host Caroline Rush CBE, British Fashion Council, JD’s Kevin Jiang, Selfridges, The Telegraph and Dunhill – to name a few.
Samuel Ross from A-Cold-Wall was announced as the winner who will receive £150,000 and 12 months of mentoring to develop his emerging business that launched in 2015.
A-Cold-Wall saw an €8.4 million turnover in 2018 and Ross was praised for his strong business strategy coupled with his utilitarian approach to design. “Samuel proved to be the strongest candidate with the most comprehensive business strategy and decisive plans on how to use the fund to his best advantage,” said Caroline Rush, chief executive officer of the British Fashion Council.
The fashion designer said of the award, which is sponsored by JD.com, “I feel it’s good to grow the commercial side of the business, to have the mentors in place to support that growth and to really just be a sponge for these professionals. I’m maturing the tailoring aspect of the brand, so I’m really excited to be able to further employ men’s wear engineers, and open up to British production with wool and tailoring,” he said. “Ideally, I’d love to start a relationship between A-Cold-Wall and Savile Row and I’m keen to push into mono-store developments globally like in Hong Kong, China and, of course, the U.K.”
Previous winners of the JD.com sponsored award include Christopher Shannon, Patrick Grant of E Tatutz and Craig Green. The full list of 2019’s finalists are below:
