A tribute to Karl Lagerfeld
A project run by former Vogue Paris editor-in-chief Carine Roitfeld, will see Karl Lagerfeld’s nearest and dearest, reimagine his signature white shirt. Contributors include Kate Moss, Cara Delevingne, Diane Kruger, Amber Valletta, Tommy Hilfiger, Alessandro Michele, and Takashi Murakami. The project will raise funds for French medical research charity Sauver la Vie at Paris Descartes University which Lagerfeld had supported for a number of years.
“The participants in this tribute are all people who Karl knew, who he felt connected to, or who inspired him,” Pier Paolo Righi, chief executive officer of Karl Lagerfeld, told WWD. “After Karl’s passing, so many people wanted to share their admiration for Karl and express their emotions.”
Righi has described the shirts as “a very unique and intimate way of relating back to Karl” and will be displayed during Paris Fashion Week in September at Karl Lagerfeld’s Parisian headquarters. 7 shirts will be designed and produced 77 times which will be sold for £777 – the repetitive use of number 7 reflects the late designer’s favourite number.
Roitfeld, who is the style advisor to the Karl Lagerfeld brand said the White Shirt Project would “allow us to honour his legacy while incorporating his unwavering love of fashion and giving back; I can’t imagine a better way for us to celebrate his passion for creativity.”
Karl Lagerfeld once said “If you ask me what I’d most like to have invented in fashion, I’d say the white shirt. For me, the white shirt is the basis of everything. Everything else comes after.” He famously purchased all of his white shirts from Hilditch & Key on the Rue de Rivoli.
