A Day in The Life of Ruby

My Alarm goes off...
At 6am, and after a few snoozes I am up by 6.30am at the latest. I have a quick breakfast of overnight oats before leaving home at 7.30am; earlier if I have an appointment with a candidate. I love reading, so either I catch up with the latest copy of Glamour or a book on my kindle on the tube in.

I’m responsible for...
The Production, Technical and Wholesale desk at Freedom for UK based businesses, working across roles from entry level through to senior managers. I work with high street manufacturers and high end luxury labels, taking a lot of joy from the variety of roles and clients I work with. I work closely with both my clients and candidates to try and ensure expectations on both sides are met; I aim for a more consultative approach with both. Having been a candidate before in the industry, I have had a few bad experiences of working with agencies myself, especially of being pushed into interviews I am not sure about as well as agencies not understanding me and my skill set. So I came into this role with the aim to treat candidates how I would wish to be treated.

I Got the Job...
After being made redundant in the recession in 2009. I was a Merchandise Manager in a High Street Childrenswear supplier. I used Freedom whilst I was there to get in temp staffing for the technical team as and when needed. Freedom was my first point of call when my role was being relocated and they helped me get an interim temp role. Having studied Product Development at The London College of Fashion and coming from the industry, Freedom recognised my experience and knowledge and I took the leap into recruitment.

My Typical Day...
Starts between 8-8.30am, depending on my diary. I appreciate candidates find it difficult to speak when at work; out of hours and lunchtimes are best times for them. I normally pre arrange calls or meetings with candidates before they get into work, whether it is to speak to a candidate I am working a current role with, or catching up with a candidate on their job search. I go through all my job responses and emails and reply to all queries, or make calls where necessary. Every day is so different which is what I love about my role. I can have some days full of meeting with clients and candidates, both on and off site, through to candidate catch ups, or sourcing candidates for any particular roles.

My Most Memorable Moment...
I have so many, but I think it must be when I have received a thank you from candidates, whether it’s been flowers, a thank you card, or simply an email. That always makes me smile.

The Worst Part of My Job...
Telling a candidate they were not successful in a role. Especially when you have come to realise how much the role or company meant to them. It’s never a nice feeling, but keeping the candidate updated and being honest with them through the process can only help them in the future.

The Best Part of My job....
I love talking to my candidates and some I have known from my initial days in recruitment – I love the fact I can pick up the phone to them and they take the time to speak to me. My role is to ultimately support both the client and candidate through the recruitment process, with the aim to make it a seamless process for them. So customer care is very important to me. I also love the fact that I am still involved in the fashion industry from my education and my industry days but on a wider scale. I have learnt so much and still am learning about the industry.

After Work....
Before I was pregnant, I was a bit of a gym bunny, with a personal trainer and a love for spinning, swimming and weights training. After work an hour in the gym would be my downtime followed by some TV, whether it's Suits, Homeland, Masterchef or GBBO!
